Great Lakes Caring Takes a Great Step Towards Preventing Falls

Great Lakes Caring is launching the Great StepsSM Program—a comprehensive next-generation care initiative that is designed to not only help prevent an individual from falling in the home, but also address the frequently missed underlying issues that often cause those falls. The program is provided by Great Lakes Caring physical therapists, as well as other clinicians from various disciplines, including occupational therapists, dieticians, speech therapists and registered nurses. They collaborate with specialized physicians to develop individualized plans of care for every patient in the Great StepsSM Program.

“More than one-third of adults over 65 years of age experience falls, many of which occur in their own home,” says William Deary, CEO of Great Lakes Caring. “This astounding statistic led us to create a program that utilizes a multi-disciplinary approach in identifying our patients’ leading causes of their falls and providing the health care services and education necessary to prevent any further falls.”

The Great StepsSM Program utilizes care services that are focused on three major areas related to falls: Proprioception (balance), Vestibular (spatial orientation) and Vision. Other supplementary areas of focus include history of falls, psychological effects (i.e. fear of falling) and effects of medication. The program is also augmented by other unique services and programs provided by Great Lakes Caring, like the Roll for Control® incontinence program.

The Great StepsSM Program is now available for current Great Lakes Caring patients, as well as those who are not presently under the care of Great Lakes Caring, if prescribed by a physician.
