Managing Medications at Home

For many people, as the number of years of life increase, so do the number of medications they take on a daily basis. According to the National Council on Aging (NCOA), on average, the older adult takes 4-5 prescription medications and 2 over-the-counter medications daily. Often, medications are added as symptoms appear without a review of all the other medications and/or supplements the person may be already taking. It is important for people and/or their caregivers to review all medications at least one time per year with their primary care physician or their health care coordinator. A review should also occur whenever a new medication is added to an individual’s treatment plan.

If you need to take a medication at night, separate it from your other medications so you do not inadvertently take something else in its place. Turn on the light to make sure you are taking the right medication!
